We are currently doing this with plugins. Ie. the basics are built in
and the rest will be provided as plugins that the user can switch on in
a plugin manager (not yet present).

The first plugin we will have is a cost plugin since not all need this
(for example free projects just wanting to get a clear view of tasks to
be done).

Yes, we will have this feature in the future.
