The only format I'm aware of that works in both directions is the XML
export that started with EndNote 7.  The native format (.enl files) is
of course not documented at all (and possibly protected by law in some
coutries...)

pyblio 1.3 supports this XML format, so you might have ended your long
journey, or almost. What do you want to do? A one shot conversion is
certainly possible. Working alternatively with EndNote and another tool
on the same DB is not possible (or at least convenient) though.
