A related problem here is that it kind of *looks* like you can edit text files etc. as they currently appear in views, even though you can't. The usability test on GNOME 1.2 flagged this up a couple of years ago with the suggestion that read-only document views should look more like Acrobat Reader or something like that: http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/ut1_report/file_management.html (See "Nautilus Viewer Mode" about 2/3 of the way down the page).
