I used the following configure command on Ubuntu 17.04:

     CC=clang \
     CFLAGS="-fsanitize=cfi -flto -fvisibility=hidden -fno-sanitize-trap=all -g" \
     RANLIB=llvm-ranlib \
     ./configure --disable-shared
