Ok, I just did a bit of research into this.

In Epiphany 1.0x this is a custom widget, a combination of the combo box
and glist which is rigged to update and refresh.

However, in 1.1x this is done properly using GtkEntry +
GtkEntryCompletion which are only available in Gtk2.4 (the URLs are
misleading so try and ignore them):

Jumping GnuCash to Gtk 2.4 would probably not be a bad thing since most
of GO will be headed that way at some point in the future.

Apart form gda can (or should be able to) do both dbi and odbc for you,
whereas odbc and dbi don't offer anything other than themselves. ;)

You're best querying this one (and anything gda related) with Rodrigo
and/or the gnome-db team.

Where do you draw the line? ;)  Anyway, the fact is it isn't part of gtk
nor ever will be, but is part of libgoffice and guppi is dead.  So that
nicely narrows your options to a dead library or an up-and-coming one
that is well designed and well maintained.

Btw, I'm really glad you're strongly considering GO integration, Derek. 
I think it'll be an extremely positive move for both GO and for GnuCash.
