How to run gdm.

Hi,
I want to use GNOME desktop manager.
I know how to install only X. So I can run "xinit" but not "startx".
It means I can not run window manager, gdm.
When I did "startx" the system hung up on "gnome-login-check".
I do not know how can I solve it because I was copying file by file.
What packages should I install  to run gdm?
