My recollection is that either Bill or Peter specifically asked a few  
gnopernicus users for their opinions while the debate was raging, but

This is certainly a flaw in the current design of most of our instant  
apply dialogs-- there should be some sort of 'oops' feature, but that  
was another debate that we never quite resolved:

Some prefs dialogs have since taken the lead and added a Revert  
button anyway, which is the option I personally prefer. However,  
doing so also slightly negates that advantage of removing the Close  
button from those dialogs, as a conventional Revert button occupies  
the same row as Close and Help along the bottom.
