Any way to set splash screen?

Is there anyway to add a splash screen? I noticed there is one placed in
/usr/share/pixmaps/splash/gnome-splash.png ... There is also the old
helix splash screen. I still however see no splash screen at the start
of X/GNOME. Is there an option somewhere within gnome2 to set one?
