I'm using 7.2 (at home) at the moment. The fonts aren't exactly screwy,
just puzzling and it might have something to do with my fonts and the
fact that I expect some of them to be non-proportional (such as
Monospace) yet they're not, or, rather, they suffer the same off
compression that the proportional fonts do.

I think things will be clearer --- or at least we'll be able to describe
them more clearly --- when the chooser allows only non-proportional
fonts to be chosen, or the terminal displays proportional fonts as
wonkily as they should be on the command line.

In general, things seem better on 7.2 than 7.3 for me, but I'll have to
double check on Monday when I get in to work.

Right now, Lucida Console on 7.2 is excellent. ;)
