extremely slow startup times

Hi all-

I hope I haven't overlooked something obvious. And I tried the list
archives first, to no avail. Here goes:

I started with a stock RedHat 7.3 system, upgraded to Ximian Gnome 1.4,
and then decided I'd like to look at the Gnome2 stuff, so I installed
all of the rpms that were necessary (everything off the "build order"
list on the gnome.org site).

Now, when I try to start X via startx, X loads and then it sits and sits
and sits some more. After several minutes, if I'm lucky, the gnome
splash screen finally comes up but it still just sits there. An eternity
later, some of gnome loads, and changes the background from the
crosshatch to the default gradient. But it never goes past this. I never
get any panels to come up, or icons on the desktop or anything. Sawfish
has started, because if I load a program from a terminal, it shows up
(wm decorations, gtk themes, and all) and acts normally.

(gdm loads fine, but hangs after I login... same thing)

Anyone have any ideas? I started with the 7/30/02 release of the
snapshots, and tried again today with the 8/02/02, but it was the same.
I tried clearing out all my previous gnome sessions and settings, rm'ing
/tmp/*, oaf-slay after upgrade... It's probably a configuration issue,
but I'm at a loss on where to start.

The only error messages I can come up with are:

** (Process:2230) WARNING **: CORBA_ORB_destroy: ORB still has 2 refs.
** (Process:2230) WARNING **: ORB: a total of 6 refs to 5 ORB objects
were leaked.

and (ad nauseum):
FAMOpen failed, FAMErrno=0

I haven't been able to figure out where to even start on those.

The CPU is barely being utilized (I have an AMD 750, 384M RAM), so it
seems to either be hanging on something, or waiting (forever) for
something... probably waiting since pieces work after insane amounts of
time pass.

Hmmm... if there's any other info you need, let me know. Any ideas are
welcome, especially since I haven't come up with anything that has
worked.

Thanks in advance!
