My understanding of things is that the default for GTK 2.0 was 0, and for 2.2 it will be changed to 1. VTE follows the behavior of the development versions of GTK and also defaults to 1. This leads to problems when the defaults don't match up. I'll try to have the widget adapting to the behavior of GTK as a whole sometime today.
