I think your observations are spot on. However it does need to be
pointed out that if you are downloading Gnome2 from the Ximian, you are
doing it from the snapshots, which are straight off CVS - no QA or
anything, they aren't meant to be very stable.

The main problem is that no-one has yet produced a binary, fully stable,
QA'ed version of Gnome 2. Ximian I presume are working on their version,
and I think if Redhat or Mandrake produced a version I would definately
use it.

You can get the official releases from gnome, which should be pretty
stable, but it is only in source I believe, which is a pain.

So I expect the stability will improve massively once the distros start
to contribute back their patches. For what it's worth I actually do use
gnome2 as my std setup, though I haven't converted my wife's machine
yet!
