The think that makes open source so great, and so stable is that people are willing to test on their production desktops, and not in a sterile testing environment. For example, Microsoft recent beta testing required a clean install of Windows, and then installation of the development tool with NO other software installed on the box. Upgrade involved reinstalling the OS and software. This might test whether the software works with Windows, but it doesn't tell you too much about what all those 'other' applications might do the environment. Am I suggesting that others should do this? NO! - but it's great if they do because it give developers feedback that's real world.
