Just to restate this, because I don't think it can be said often enough- GNOME is going to try very hard to make sure GNOME is usable all the way through the 2.2 cycle. Also, GNOME has never actually done this before :) So... this could be very nasty, could break things left and right, could be a lot more than a bit of 'occasional downtime.' So... please weigh that carefully.
