only failsafe gnome login works

Hi,

Today I took the plunge and updated my RH7.3 from ximian 1.4 to the
latest and greatest gnome2 snaps using Red Carpet.

If I login with session=Gnome or session=Default then it starts to log
me in and then stops cold.  After a minute or so I get dumped back into
GDM.  

I can login in with session=Gnome failsafe and it seems to work.

Any ideas what might be wrong if I choose a regular login?  Is there a
log file that I can check?
