what works?  you can run 'gnome-session' here and it logs you in ok?

look for this in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf:

[debug]
# This will enable debugging into the syslog, usually not neccessary
# and it creates a LOT of spew of random stuff to the syslog
Enable=true

then it will send output somewhere in /var/log.  also, ~/.gnome-errors
or ~/.xsession-errors might have some hints as to what's going on.
