Gaim is fresh from CVS and built for gtk2.  I can't think of a good gtk1
app to try this with, but maybe I'll install an old Gaim and try it to
see if this is a gtk1 app thing.  

Also, Heath's suggestion hasn't helped either -- tried that last night. 
Sigh.  

Thanks for your notes, though.  I'll have to harrass the Evolution list
with this.  Should have posted there initially, but this is such a
friendly little community here ;-).
