No, sorry.  The more I research about this, the more I am convinced
boc's decision was the correct one.

The problem is that you have some .la files that reference libesd.la. 
However, .la files convey no useful information on Linux systems, they
just cause problems.  You can simply remove the .la files you have that
reference  libesd.la, and everything will work correctly.
