gtk+ theme preferences does not change theme

gtk+ theme preferences does not change themes. I installed Gnome 2 through redcarpet 2 days ago. I love fast as hell. I'm using Redhat 7.3 and can't seem to change the default theme. I installed a new one but no go... Has anyone run into this ? Any direction would be appreciated..
