Bah, I'm forgetting what it's called on 1.4 (I'm on 1.5 these days, and
a lot of things have changed).  Worst case, "evolution --force-shutdown"
ought to work.

I'm assuming there's some other process left alive which is writing the
data to file on exit.  You need to kill all such processes first.  Maybe
evolution-wombat is keeping such data around?
