To display images, be sure to set the appropriate option (this is from
1.5, YMMV):

 Tools / Settings / Mail Preferences / HTML Mail

Anyway, if not set, it will display a border only. The red crossed paper
icon indicates an error while retrieving that image.

By any chance, you don't need to set a proxy, do you?

"Reinstalling the distribution"? Did you start over with a clean home,
or did you inherit / import your old settings? How?

I likely can tell you more, if you send me one of those mails. Please

There is no such thing as an plug-in to view images. Evolution is
perfectly capable of displaying images inline.
