Turns out, I am wrong. Doh, this will teach me to answer mails before I
got an adequate dose of caffeine. ;)

Any image not being displayed will have that red crossed icon.
Regardless of the link being broken or images not displayed on purpose
(Settings).

So just make sure, your settings are appropriate:

  Tools / Settings / Mail Preferences / HTML Mail / Loading Images

Use "always load images from the internet", if you like to. If you don't
want that, but only load images from a couple of legit senders, use
"load images if sender is in address book" and create a Contact for
those news mails.
