I would bet on your /etc/hosts file being b0rked and completely empty.
Check your /etc/hosts file and add a line like the following, if it is
missing:
127.0.0.1 localhost
If the hosts file does have a line like the above, please send us the
contents of your /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/network files. HTH
