Removing XD2

I'd like to remove XD2, and return my SuSE 9 Pro system to either KDE or
the SuSE-standard gnome. Searching the wire, I've found numerous
references to the fact that there are no supported, simple methods of
doing this. The best suggestion seems to be using rpm -qa | grep ximian
to determine the list of Ximian-based packages, and ripping them all
out. Then, use YaST2 to patch the system back up. 

So, questions:
1. Is this the only the way to get the job done? Is there no "uninstall"
procedure that's less destructive?
2. If I do this, won't this leave my system without a whole pile of
"guts"? (Such as glib, etc?) Will the system remain stable long enough
for me to re-acquire the packages from elsewhere?
3. Would apt-rpm be as good a way to recover the system?
