I talked to the folks on IRC the other day about this issue. JP happened
to have the SuSE 9.1 RPMs around and immediately checked them. There is
nothing that could do it -- no way.

There is always the option of an unrelated app going berserk. Maybe even
rsync burned the data?

So am I. Jeremey, maybe you should check your script, cron jobs, rsync
any stuff...
