In MS-Outlook this is called "exporting." I'm using Evolution 2.0.3 and didn't see any export command. But, if you select all of your contacts (Control-A), the option to "Save as vcard" will appear under the File menu. Then you can save the entire contact list in a separate file. It's easy to import the contacts back into evolution if necessary. Once again, I'm doing this on 2.0.3, but I assume there is the same (or similar) command in 1.4.6. Hope this helps.
