There is a known issue that can lead to hangs while composing mail due a
faulty /etc/hosts file. This definitely was reported for Mandrake under
certain circumstances.
The issue is, there may be an entry for localhost missing in your
/etc/hosts file. Check your hosts file to contain a line like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
The last field can be safely omitted, additional whitespaces don't
matter.

IIRC the hangs where never reported to last for 30 seconds but about 5
seconds. However, his may be due to otherwise screwed up DNS settings on
your laptop. Do you use a local DNS server?
