If Anders suggestions did work for you, feel happy. ;)  If not, there is
another possibility:

There are IMAP servers out there known to be broken. They simply return
bogus information to requests they claim to support. Unfortunately they
don't.

FWIW, I came across the very same behavior several times now with the
freemail web.de IMAP account. Using POP3 works, but that probably isn't
an option for you.
