Yes, that's right. When composing a message, I select one of my POP mail
accounts to send from either by leaving the default POP account
displayed or by using the drop-down list of my accounts at "From:".

One of my POP mail accounts is my default mail account. It is displayed
at "From:" by default every time I open a compose message window. The
AOL account is *not* set as default.

Nope. It is not and never was set up as the default account.

... but how do you explain that, when I click on  "Send," I get a window
saying that it is sending from my (non-default, not selected by me) AOL
IMAP account and asking for the AOL account's password in order to
proceeed with sending the message?

In the Windoze world where AOL usually operates, MS or AOL or other apps
taking over as default - sometimes without giving you the option to
decline - is a pretty common occurrence. So, forgive me for being a
little paranoid or attributing intention where there may not be any. But
it certainly is behaving exactly in the way that I describe.
