I really don't have any clue, when an updated Ximian Desktop will be
available. IIRC back when Gnome 2.4 was released and similar questions
regarding XD using the latest Gnome version came up, Gnome 2.6 was
mentioned as a good bet.

However, this is only from memory and might be a red herring, as I don't
know how stable XD-unstable is and which Gnome version it uses.

Yes, that should be correct.

Evolution is *not* tied to any distribution. It is a Gnome application
and was planned to be part of the official Gnome Desktop 2.6 release.
However, Evolution 2.0 missed the time line for Gnome 2.6, but I am
positive it will be part of the official Gnome Desktop 2.8 release.

So, yes -- Evolution will run on any recent Gnome desktop.

Red Carpet AFAIK will run on any recent Gnome desktop as well. However,
as is pretty useless without appropriate channels [1], RC will not make
sense on all Gnome desktops.

You can get packages for both of them (even for not XD supported
distributions) from the Ximian FTP server [3]. As this is Open Source,
they are available as source code [4] as well, which will enable you to
run Evolution on pretty much any Gnome desktop.


Most distributions will ship the latest available (stable) version
anyway. Updates likely can be expected by any distribution, at least if
they are security related.

[1] For example, there even is a Mandrake channel available through Red
Carpet, which enables the user to use RC for Mandrake updates. This is
the case even though Mandrake is not a supported XD distribution [2].

[2] This is the case since old XD 1.4 (Gnome 1.4) days. XD support was
dropped, as Mandrake shipped with a more recent Gnome version. Please
compare this to the previously mentioned statements about downgrading...
