Yeah, but it is simpler.

My usual method is to buy a new hard drive.  Swap with the drive that has 
the system installed on it.  Install to the new drive.  Mount the old 
drive and copy what needs to be moved over on a case by case basis.  If 
something bad happends, I can go back to the old version by just swaping 
drives.
