Superuser Problems

I have this problem using both xsu (for gnome) and
kdesu. I can get to the particular program in root
mode with no problem, but then when I exit, the
desktop settings revert to those for root. My
background desktop image changes and so do the icons
on my desktop. I don't think I am still in root mode
though, it's just that for some reason Ximian changes
the desktop settings.

Any suggestions on how to fix this or do I really just
need to run all programs in root from the command
line.
