Adding a printer?

Using SuSE 9 Pro with XD2.

I'm trying to add a printer, using the System > Personal Settings >
Hardware > Printers > New Printer tool. The system allows me to perform
all the selections, but when I go to Apply it, it asks for a
username/password. The username defaults to root; when I give it the
correct root password (and it *is* correct), it refuses to accept it,
redisplaying the login box again. No combination works, forcing me to
cancel out. The end result: no printer.

Any suggestions?
