I am now able to send mail from my AOL account using Evolution. Under
the "Sending Mail" tab in Settings,

1. I set host as smtp.aol.com:587
2. left SSL at "never"
3.checked "server requires authentication"
4. left "authentication type at "Plain"
5. inserted my AOL username and
6. checked "remember this password."

Since I had done all this previously 9after guidance received here) and
it did *not* work, I tend to think that indications that AOL was
tweaking its new "open Mail Access" were probably true and are what
fixed things for me.

If there are any other Linux users with AOL accounts out there (unlikely
as it may be), check

1. AOL keywords "Open mail Access" and 
2. "Accessing the AOL Mail System using IMAP & Authenticated SMTP - An
Unofficial Guide" - http://members.aol.com/adamkb/aol/mailfaq/imap/
