Re: Red Carpet upgrade to Evo causing Gnome application crashes

OK, I have news to report.

1) This was apparently by design.  The design didn't quite get
communicated, though.  I'm poking the necessary people to get that
changed.

2) Red Hat Linux 8.0 is past its end-of-life, i.e. there aren't any more
security fixes coming from Red Hat itself.

3) There was a security bug in one of the mozilla libraries we use.  For
that reason, we're requiring an updated mozilla.  The downgrade I
suggest works, nominally, but apparently it's not entirely secure.
Since Red Hat isn't providing new mozilla packages for 8.0, XD2 mozilla
becomes a functional necessity, assuming you want a fix to the security
bug.  If you also want galeon, that's also available... from XD2.

4) I'm told one of the widgets in Evo (not sure which one) has a bug
that is fixed in newer gtk2 -- hence, the updated gtk2 requirement.
This implies that you'll be running into problems at some point of you
use the old gtk2.

Options for Red Hat Linux 8.0 / Evolution users include:

1) Sticking with (or reverting to) Evo 1.4.5
2) Installing XD2
3) My workaround, which apparently has its weak points.
4) Upgrading to a newer distro.  Red Hat Linux 9 is one option, for now,
but it's a bit of a dead end.  It's already past its end-of-life as
well, and there's no telling when we'll effectively require XD2 in order
to get newer Evo working on that platform.  In terms of Ximian-supported
platforms, SUSE is clearly the best long-term option (since Ximian and
SUSE are both now owned by Novell), but that depends on your priorities.
Evo 2.0 probably won't be supported on the full range of platforms on
which 1.4 is currently supported, but we'll cross that bridge when we
come to it.
