you have Gnome (version?) installed or not might be helpful, too.

Which is fine and should have all your MIME type icons...

Do you have an MIME icon for plain text? It should be located in
 $prefix/share/icons/gnome/48x48/mimetypes/gnome-mime-text.png

where $prefix is the directory prefix your distro puts the Gnome stuff,
likely /usr or /opt.

Just a shot in the dark though, to verify. This icon at least is used in
Gnome 2.4 and 2.6 AFAIK. Maybe you are missing some other packages.

You don't need it, as the respective GConf value already is set to
'gnome'.

'man gconftool-2' will tell you how to use it and set a value. Anyway,
this command (untested!) should set the Icon Theme to "gnome" -- but it
will have absolutely no effect at all, as it already is set to "gnome"
on your account.

$ gconftool-2 --type string --set /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme gnome
