Several interesting points. :~)

I suppose many of the GNU projects are portable to various platforms,
including but not limited to Cygwin and minGW. A few are actually
portable to native win32 without such kluges (not intended to insult
Cygwin and minGW, products of genius -- just pointing out that Winblows 
has to be kluged to run posix software).

Anyway, I didn't want to take the time to read documentation, so I did
a quick search on sourceforge for a native Win project for chess. That 
way I could SEEM helpful without doing much work ;~)
