It’s a good’un… Here’s one of my favourite use-cases:

When you don’t have the 2, the c’’ inherits the “zero duration” 1*0, so no notes appear. When you add the 2, the c’’2 is forced to appear, that forces the whole note column to appear, and the 1*0 now shows up as a glyph [although it technically has no duration!].
