So, this also works, has the forte at the c'4.

{ <>\f c'4 d' e' d' c'1 }

I assume, <> is something like an empty set musical object, where you can
attach things just like at other notes - just here Lilypond decides to attach
to the next note? If there's no next it says "no broken bound".
