Nice!  I'll take a look at this but it seems good.  My only concern is
whether we've added enough regression tests to the suite to cover all
the issues raised by those four bugs.


So, the question becomes: do you think we're ready for rc1 tomorrow?  Or
are there more things to do such that we should hold off?

There are a class of bugs I'd like to look into regarding the jobserver
holding open (or closing early) file descriptors.  There's also an issue
with the directory cache code and open file descriptors.  Some have said
that the directory cache is actually not even helping performance; it
would be nice to work out a way to turn it off (optionally) so at least
we could do performance testing.  But that might be for the next
release.
