[bug #67965] *Huge* number of audio messages from "make check"

Thanks for testing.

So, it should be possible to use the same function to capture that output from
Qhull.

If that should be necessary at some point in the future, it shouldn't be too
hard to either generalize or duplicate whatever we decide to use for capturing
stderr to alternatively capture stdout.

In multiple other places, we are using an optional trailing argument to
"return" strings. The attached updated version of the patch does that (instead
of using std::pair).
