Again, I hit this when I tried the "reducepatch" patch (see comment #0); after
a decade I'm unsure how I stumbled upon 1/(5, 5, 5) or 1\(5, 5, 5) but reading
back it looks like it may well have been example code from TMW itself.  Which,
in that case, would indicate that at the time TMW itself invoked undocumented
code ...

Maybe I can revive Matlab r2014a on an old laptop to check but as you wrote,
current Octave just lacks support for the ndims > 2 case.  How often would
such a case turn up?  well, apparently less than once a decade ...  As it is
(currently) undocumented we could also just leave it aside.

Just curious: what would other scripting math languages do? (Python, Julia,
Maxima, ...)
