[bug #50010] Index error message "error: a(5): out of bound 1", et al. have bracket type match

ok, what would be a better retitle for what's remaining then? I also thought i
remembered 'variable type naming' in outputs being a separate discussion
somewhere, but not finding a report to defer this to
