Some additions to my previous comment:
* Maybe, re-use the existing `value_class.m` (and `handle_class.m`?) in the
folder `test/classdef` for the new self-test(s).
* Add the new self-test to the existing `test/classdef/classdef.tst`.
With these changes, you'll no longer need to modify
`test/classdef/module.mk`.
