Follow-up Comment #2:

I agree we should keep HDF5 separate from Matlab's HDF5.  According to
multiple sources, The MathWorks decided to "customize" their version of HDF5
making it more difficult for others to interoperate with their files.  I
assume they thought they were being clever and following Microsoft in having
proprietary formats as a way of locking data to their commercial program.
