Can't get visual bell to work on Debian

Hi!

I am using a Debian server over SSH, with Screen version 4.00.03jw4 (FAU) 2-May-06 from APT. I've enabled the visual bell (vbell on), but nothing is happening when programs produce a bell.

The terminal emulator doesn't seem to be at fault, as I can see the bells when using Screen on other remote systems. I'm not very familiar with the inner workings of Screen, so I would appreciate any ideas on where to begin looking for clues. :)
