I tried it with an empty ~/.bashrc and only screen -dR in ~/.bash_profile. Could you please be a little bit more specific? Do you hint at the -s flag? Seems to cause the same as shell in ~/.screenrc. In fact both should default to $SHELL, which is /bin/bash during ~/.bash_profile. Even more curious, why screen is calling a login shell. I can reproduce that sourcing only if I set shell -/bin/bash. Maybe the default changed to -$SHELL?
