because renumbering happens.

open two dozen of windows when reading, say, www.heise.de,
and then close some of the articles you have read;
eg windows # 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19 and 23.
now fill the holes with the remaining windows.
how many keystrokes will this take you?

i bet it'll take you a lot more than
    CTRL-A :renum RETURN

now, if there was such a command then
i'd call your suggestion to keep using
the windowlist command and its silly
up/down selection "chaotic".  :-p
