Can I assume that ctrl-a is your screen escape sequence on both
  sessions?

Sounds like you're using a different escape sequence on machine2.

I just duplicated what I believe to be the same scenarion. Started
screen in an xterm on "local" machine. ssh'd into another machine,
started screen. Both of my screen sessions are using the escape
sequence of ctrl-a. If I do "ctrl-a c" I get another shell on the
"local" machine. If I do "ctrl-a a c" then I get another shell on the
remote machine. Now, I can detach the remote session with "ctrl-a a d".
Or, on a remote session shell I can type "screen -X detech", which
  might work better for you.

I believe I understand what you're trying to do. I routintly run
screen inside screen in order to retain my screen splits across
  detach/reattach.

Well, I think I came into this thread a bit late and might have missed
what you are trying to do initially, but I think I understand now
if what I've said above about your situation and me trying to
  duplicate is correct.

Keep on trying. I'm confident we can solve your problem.
