  I don't see an overriding escape sequence in that file, so I have to 
  assume it's ctrl-a.  Is there a .screenrc in your home directory on 
  either machine that might have an 'escape' directive in it?  I think 
  we need to verify what the escape sequence on machine 2 is before
  proceeding.

  If you ssh into machine2 from a shell not inside screen on machine1, 
  can you use the ctrl-a escape to create new shells, detach, etc.?
